Amazon Tribe sues New York Times for the story, it stands that led to porn addicted claims

An Amazon tribe has sued the New York Times (NYT) for a report on the community that has access to fast internet, which she claims led to its members being labeled as porn addicts.

The defamation right case said that the report of the American newspaper De Marubo -Stam depicted as “unable to tackle basic exposure on the internet” and emphasized “accusations that their youth had been digested by pornography”.

The lawsuit also called TMZ and Yahoo as defendants, and said that their news stories “mock their youth” and “have presented their traditions wrong”.

The NYT said that his report did not derive or said that the members of the tribe were addicted to porn. TMZ and Yahoo have been contacted for comment.

The Marubo, a native community of around 2,000 people, is looking for at least $ 180 million (£ 133 million) damage.

The story of the NYT, written nine months after the Marubo gained access to Starlink, a satellite internet service from the SpaceX by Elon Musk, said that the tribe “already struggled with the same challenges that have stretched American households for years”.

The lawsuit claims that other news broadcasts have made the NYT report sensational, including a head of TMZ that refers to porn addiction.

The claimants, community leader Enoque Marubo and Brazillian activist Flora Dutra, who helped to spread the 20 $ 15,000 Starlink -antennas to the tribe, said that the NYT story helped to nourish “a worldwide media storm”, according to the news service of the Courthouse.

This, they said, subject them to “humiliation, intimidation and irreparable damage to their reputation and safety”.

A spokesperson for the New York Times said: “Every honest reading of this piece shows a sensitive and nuanced exploration of the benefits and complications of new technology in a remote native village with a proud history and preserved culture.

“We intend to defend vigorously against the lawsuit.”
