General Muhozi Kaineerugaba, the son of the President of Uganda, has confirmed the bodyguard of the detention leader, who has been missing for five days.
Edward Sebuufu, aka Eddie Mutwe, was reportedly picked up on Sunday by non -created persons in both civil clothing and military fatigue in the central city of Kiwango, which led to public indignation.
In a series of messages on X, Gen Kainerugabai, who is also the military chef of Uganda, said that Mr. Sebuufu was “in my basement” and had confirmed the photo of the Bodyguard with a clean shaved head.
The comments from Gen Kainerugabai have led to public anger with Ugandans using the hashtag #freeddiemutwe to demand Mr Sebuufu’s release and to condemn his detention.
Gen Kainerugaba often makes political comments, of which his critics say it is contrary to the discipline code of the army.
The 51-year-old army general is seen as a possible successor to his long-term father, Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, who denies that he is taking care of his son for presidency.
Gen Kainerugaba has made many controversial statements on social media and touches subjects as a taboo for a serving soldier.
In 2022 he made the headlines for discussing an invasion of neighboring Kenya, a comment that forced his father to step in and apologize.
He recently led anger with a tweet in which he threatened to imagine opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
Late on Thursday he wake another social media storm after he had published a photo of Mr Sebuufu, Bobi Wine’s Bodyguard,, half-naked and shaved clean.
Bobi Wine said that Mr. Sebuufu “Violent Kidnapped” by Kiwango was known by armed men who traveled in a police van, popularly known as “Drone” before being taken to an unknown place.
In a series of reports, Gen Kainerugaba said that his soldiers had captured Mr. Sebuufu “from a grasshopper” and he learned Runyankore, a language spoken in West -Oandanda while he was in custody.
He said that Mr. Sebuufu “looked very smart nowadays” after his beard was shaved by “my boy”, referring to his junior soldiers.
The general said he would only release the bodyguard if he ordered it by his father, President Museveni.
Gen Kainerugaba did not explicitly state where Mr. Sebuufu was held, or on what legal charges.
Security forces do not yet have to comment on this, but the spokesperson for the Kituma Rusoke spokesperson on Monday told the local media that he was not aware of Mr. Sebuufu who was held in a police station.
Oppositive officials and users of social media in Uganda have demanded that the bodyguard is produced in court if it is legal detention.
Bobi Wine has called for a “solidarity” rally on Friday in the capital Kampala, who accuses Gen Kainerugaba for “illegally holding, torture and dehumanes” his bodyguard.
“This is a non-party-related opportunity to unite. Friends of Eddie and other Ugandans of good conscience, let us come together with Eddie with Eddie, but all political prisoners!,” Bobi Wine posted on X.
In An explanationThe Uganda Law Society has called for the immediate release of the Bodyguard, and said that his test was not an isolated matter, but “part of a systematic campaign to silence different opinion differences and the ambitions of people longing for freedom.”
Society feared that the reported involvement of the army in the case “underlines a dangerous coherence of military power and political oppression”.
Sebuufu, who is responsible for Bobi Wine’s personal security detail, has been arrested and accused of various violations several times, including betrayal and illegal possession of ammunition. The opposition says that his arrests and charges are politically motivated.
He has been an important target in various security performance on opposition activities, especially during elections and mobilization campaigns, local media reported.
Bobi Wine, a popular singer who has declared his intention to challenge President Museveni for the second time in the 2026 elections, is often prevented from keeping political rallies.
There are growing concern about focusing opposition figures and supporters through security authorities as political mobilization intensify the elections.
