Archive video shows conclusions opting for earlier popes

About 133 cardinals from all over the world come together in Vatican City to choose the next pope, in a conclave that starts on 7 May.

When white smoke rises from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, the world will know that a new pope has been chosen.

The BBC has a retrospective of archive footage of the results of earlier conclusions, back as Pope Pius XII in 1939 to Pope Francis in 2013.

See the moment when the election of each pope was announced and how long it took before cardinals selected them.
