Bodies of five skiers found near Zermatt Resort in Switzerland

The bodies of five skiers were found by rescuers near the luxury Zermatt Resort of Switzerland.

They were found one day after the emergency services were warned by a group of climbers who rise the Rimpfischhorn – a peak of 4,199 meters in the Valais Alps – to various couples skis that remained near the top.

Aerial and soil investigation led to the discovery of the bodies under the top at the Adler Glacier, the local police of Valais said in a statement on Sunday.

The victims were found at different heights on avalanche rubble in areas at a great height near the Swiss-Italian border.

Three bodies were in one area and two more were discovered on a narrow piece of snow, said Rescue Service Air Zermatt.

During the search, a fifth pair of skis was found and confirmed that the group had traveled as a party of five. Their identities have not yet been formally released.

The office of the public prosecutor has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

In a separate incident on Friday evening, Air Zermatt was also involved in a challenging mountain rescue on the Fiescherhörner, where four alpinists were stranded in the midst of fog and strong wind.

The first evacuation attempt had to be demolished because of the weather, but a second attempt just after midnight brought all four to safety.
