Jill Sobule, a groundbreaking American songwriter whose hit I Kissed a Girl Breat is considered the first song with open-homo themes to crack the Billboard Top 20, died in a house fire in the American city of Minneapolis, said her publicist.
Sobule, whose satirical national anthem-super model was shown in the coming-of-age film Clueless from 1995, was 66.
She would perform on Friday in her hometown Denver to present songs of her autobiographical stage musical. There will now be a free meeting in honor of her.
Tribute has entered social media, including the English musician Lloyd Cole, who said: “I am really too numb to post a lot of everything. We loved her. She loved us.”
The career of Sobule, born in 1959, included three decades, her music that deals with subjects, including the Death Penalty, Anorexia and LGBTQ+ Rights.
But her most famous work came on her 1995 album of the same name, including Supermodel and I kissed a girl.
The latter drew attention in 2008 when Katy Perry released another single from her own title.
Sobule later became a pioneer of the use of crowdfunding to release albums, and wrote music for theater and television programs, including the theme for the Nickelodeon Show Unfabulous.
