George WendtFamous for his leading role in the long-term NBC-Sitcom “Cheers” is dead.
Family sources tell TMZ … he died early on Tuesday morning and passed peacefully in his house at his house.
The official cause of death is unclear.
George’s family remembers him as “a loving family man, a beloved friend and confidant for all those who are lucky to have known him” … and they say he will be missed forever.
Wendt played as standard Peterson in all 275 episodes of “Cheers” and earned six consecutive nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
When “Cheers” got out of the blue in 1993, George got his own sitcom “The George Wendt Show.”
George also traded on the big screen … with rolls in “Airplane II: The Volgel”, “No Small Affair”, “Fletch”, “The Little Rascals”, “Spice World,” “Outside Providence”, “Alice in Wonderland,” “Santa Buddies” and “Sandy Wexler.”
He was born in Chicago as one of the nine children and went to high school in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin before registering at the University of Notre Dame. After the university, he received comedy Improv and landed a few small roles in TV programs such as “Taxi”, “Soap” and “M*A*S*H” before he got his big break on “Cheers”.
George was 76.
