The European Commission has published a “route map” with its plans to end the dependence on Europe of Russian energy in the coming years.
According to the plans, the import of all the Russian gas and liquid natural gas for the Member States of the European Union will be prohibited by the end of 2027.
“We will no longer allow Russia to arm energy against us … We will no longer indirectly help fill the (Kremlin’s) war boxes,” said European Energy Commissioner than Jorgensen in a press conference in Strasbourg on Tuesday.
In response to the plans, spokesperson for Kremlin Dmitry Peskov told the Reuters news agency on Tuesday that Europe “shot itself in the foot”.
The EU promised to end its energy relationships with Russia after Moscow launched his full invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In June, a series of legislative proposals will be submitted in which all EU member states are asked to make “national plans” to abolish Russian gas, nuclear fuel and oil imports, according to the European Commission.
EU member states must submit strategies under the plans for replacing Russian oil imports by the end of 2027.
Countries have also been asked to outline strategies to end their dependence on Russia for uranium, enriched uranium and other nuclear materials.
The EU hopes to leave Russian gas by improving “energy efficiency, accelerating the use of renewable energy and diversifying deliveries,” said the European Commission.
Although the EU dependence of Russian oil, gas and nuclear fuels has decreased considerably since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the block still imports a considerable amount of its energy from Russia.
According to the report, the import of the EU gas from Russia has fallen from 45% in 2021 to 19% in 2024.
The share of Russian oil import has now also shrunk from 27% in the beginning of 2022 to 3%.
Work must be done to reduce the dependence on the block of Russian nuclear supplies, products and services, according to the report, with more than 14% of uranium in the EU from Russia in 2024.
The dependence on the EU of Russian gas, oil and nuclear fuel is “risks to our economic safety” and financially supports the Russian war economy, according to the report.
“We got far, but not far enough,” Jorgensen added to Tuesday’s press conference, adding that measures to abolish Russian energy would be “step -by -step and gradually” to minimize the impact on the EU.
The route map also contains plans to direct the use of Russia of “Shadow Fleets” -oil tankers “with obscure ownership and insurance” that Russia uses to maintain its oil export and bypass sanctions.
