The European Union has proposed a two-euro-fixed fee for billions of small packages that have been sent directly to human houses, which are mainly from China.
The new tax would mean that packages with a value of less than 150 euros (£ 126) are no longer customary.
Online market places, including Chinese giants Temu and Shein, are expected to pay the compensation, said EU trading commissioner Maros Sefcovic.
Last year 4.6 billion of such packages entered the EU, with more than 90% from China.
Such a volume had created a huge workload for EU Douane Personnel, Sefcovic said. He argued that it had tackled challenges to ensure that the safety and standard of goods that entered the block was correctly checked.
The proposed reimbursement would “compensate for the costs,” he told the European Parliament. Brussels also hopes that some of the generated income will go to the EU budget.
The two-euro allowance applies to packages that were sent directly to consumers, while packages to warehouses would be taxed at a lower rate of 0.50 euros (£ 0.42).

After negotiations last week, the rate on small packages worth a maximum of $ 800 (£ 606) was revised to 54% of 120%. However, a fixed amount per plot of $ 100 remains.
There was fear that the Chinese e-commerce giants could then flood the European market with cheap goods, because products originally intended for the US should be dumped elsewhere.
European retailers have previously complained that they are confronted with unfair competition with foreign competitors, which they claim do not meet the strict EU product standards.
Shein and Temu have previously said that they would collaborate with supervisors and consumer standards. Temu says it has 92 million users in the EU, while Shein said it has more than 130 million.
Prior to the American rates, platforms such as Shein and Temu were familiar with the so -called “the Minimis” exemption to send items with low value directly to customers in the US without paying tasks or importing taxes.
