A senior Hamas officer has told the BBC that the Palestinian armed group will reject the last American proposal for a new Gaza -the fire and hostage release deal.
The White House said on Thursday that Israel had “signed” on the plan of the American envoy Steve Witkoff and that it was waiting for a formal response from Hamas.
Israeli media called the Israeli officials who say that Hamas would hand over 10 living hostages and the bodies of 18 dead hostages in two phases in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
The Hamas officer said that the proposal did not meet the requirements of the core, including an end to the war, and that it would respond in due course.
The Israeli government has not commented, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told the families of hostages on Thursday that he accepted Witkoff’s plan.
Israel imposed a total blockade on Gaza and resumed his military offensive against Hamas on March 18 after the collapse of a two-month cease-fire-fired fires mediated by the US, Qatar and Egypt.
It said that Hamas wanted to put pressure to release the 58 hostages who still holds it, of whom at least 20 is supposed to live.
On May 19, the Israeli army launched an extensive offensive that Netanyahu said that troops would see “control over all areas” of Gaza. The next day he said that Israel would also relieve blockade and allow a “basic” amount of food in Gaza to prevent a famine.
Nearly 4,000 people have been killed in Gaza in the last 10 weeks, according to Hamas Health Minister of Hamas.
The UN says that another 600,000 people have again been displaced by Israeli ground activities and evacuation orders, and a report of the IPC supported by the UN warns about this 500,000 people are confronted with catastrophic levels of hunger In the coming months.
During a press conference in Washington DC on Thursday, the press secretary Karoline Leavitt of the White House was asked if she could confirm a report from Saudi ownership of Al-Arabiya TV that Israel and Hamas had agreed a new cease-fire.
“I can confirm that special envoy Witkoff and the President have a cease -the -Fire proposal submitted to Hamas that supported and supported Israel. Israel signed this proposal before it was sent to Hamas,” she said.
“I can also confirm that those discussions will continue, and we hope that a cease -fires will take place in Gaza so that we can give all hostages back home,” she added.
A senior Hamas officer, however, said later that the deal contradicted earlier discussions between the negotiators of the group and Witkoff.
The civil servant said the BBC that the offer did not include guarantees that the temporary ceasefire would lead to a permanent cease -the fire, nor a return to the humanitarian protocol, which allowed hundreds of trucks of aid daily to Gaza during the last ceasefires.
Nevertheless, he said that Hamas would stay in contact with the mediators and would submit his written response in due course.
Earlier, Israël’s Channel 12 TV reported that the Netanyahu told the families of Gijzelaars during a meeting: “We agree to accept the newest Witkoff plan that has been transferred tonight. Hamas has not yet reacted. We do not believe that Hamas will be released the last hosts, and we will not leave the strip.”
His office later issued a statement in which he accused one of the reporters of the canal of trying to “smuggle” a recording device to the room where the meeting took place. But it did not deny that he had agreed to the American proposal.
Netanyahu has said earlier that Israel will only end the war when all hostages are released, Hamas is destroyed or disarmed and his leaders have been sent into exile.
Hamas said that it is ready to return all those who were kept in captivity, in exchange for a complete end of the hostilities and full Israeli pull -out from Gaza.
