A fourth round of Iran-US conversations about the Tehran nuclear program has been postponed.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Oman, facilitating negotiations, said that Saturday’s conversations in Rome were moved for logistical reasons, and added that a new date would be determined if it was agreed by all parties.
It comes after the US Minister of Defense Pete Hegseeth has warned on Thursday that Iran “would pay the result” for his support to the Houthi rebels of Yemen. This week, Washington also focused on companies that, according to her, have links to Tehran with sanctions.
President Donald Trump reached the US from an earlier nuclear agreement between Iran and five other world powers in 2018, and has long said that he would close a “better” deal.
Trump has previously warned about military action such as these new conversations, which started in April, do not succeed. Both parties described the first round of conversations in the capital Muscat of Oman as “constructive”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran confirmed that the final phase of the conversations had been postponed, but Washington still has to officially comment.
An unnamed American source told the Reuters news agency that Washington “never confirmed his participation in the fourth round of conversations”, nor was their timing confirmed.
It is unlikely that the delay means that the conversations have been demolished, with both parties who would like to avoid war.
But reports from Tehran have described the growing doubts about the usefulness of the conversations, pointing to the new sanctions and what Tehran mentions conflicting positions of the American delegation.
Part of Trump’s “maximum pressure” policy with regard to Tehran, the sanctions announced on Wednesday, were involved by the US by the US to be involved in the illegal trade in Iranian oil and petrochemicals.
The US Department of Foreign Affairs in one rack: “The Iranian regime continues to feed the conflict in the East, promote its nuclear program and support its terrorist partners and proxies.
“Nowadays, the United States take action to stop the income flow that the regime uses to finance these destabilizing activities.”
Media reports in Iran also pointed to X’s Post on X’s Post on X’s post on Thursday, which was re -posted by Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff who led the American delegation.
“Message to Iran: We see your deadly support for the Houthis. We know exactly what you are doing. You pay the result at the time and place of our choice,” the after read.
Trump has said that he is looking for a solution that would close Iran’s paths to build a nuclear bomb. But there are people in his administration who insist on the complete dismantling of the nuclear enrichment program of Iran.
They also insist on Iran to stop support for the proxies in the region, including the Houthis.
Iran says that his program is peaceful and that it has the right to enrich. It hopes for a deal to limit its nuclear program, but not to dismantle in exchange for exemption from sanctions.
After Russia, Iran has under the most extensive series of sanctions in history- the sanctions imposed on the US on the country.
President Massoud Pezeshkian has the economic policy of Iran aimed at the promise of lifting these sanctions.
