A number of countries convicted the actions of the Israeli army after troops have fired warning shots near a diplomatic delegation during a visit to the occupied West Bank.
The Israeli army accused the group of an approved route and said that warning shots were fired in the air “to distance them”. It said that “regrets the inconvenience”.
No injuries were reported in the incident, which took place in the city of Jenin, where Israel has been fighting armed Palestinian groups for years.
Many countries, some of whom had diplomats about the visit, have condemned Israel’s actions – including Spain, Egypt, France, Turkey and Italy.
Some countries involved have said that they will call for Israeli ambassadors to explain the incident, calling for investigations and statements from Israel.
The Palestinian Authority (PA), which rules parts of the occupied West Bank, has accused the Israeli security forces of deliberately focusing on the delegation in a “horrible crime”.
It said that the group was there on an official visit to the Palestinian authorities to “observe and assess the humanitarian situation and to document the current violations committed by the (Israeli) occupying troops against the Palestinian people”.
The Israeli army has been fighting against armed Palestinian factions for a number of years, with a recent increase in collisions after the outbreak of the Gaza war.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that his troops had fired “warning shots” to ensure that the delegation did not “enter an area where they were not authorized” in Jenin.
It said that the diplomats “had deviated from the approved route” and that it “regrets” the inconvenience caused by the incident.
The IDF added that it would speak with representatives of the countries involved to update them about the result of an internal investigation into the incident.
A European diplomat said that the group had gone to the area “to see the destruction” caused by months of Israeli operations.
De Pa said that dozens of countries were involved, including Egypt, Jordan, Spain, Turkey, France and the UK.
The conviction came in from nations in Europe and the broader middle -east, saved with special criticism because of the risk that it has set for the life of diplomats.
Spain, Italy and France belonged to those who said they would call on their Israeli ambassadors to clarify what happened, while the Chief of the EU foreign policy said that all threats for the life of diplomats are “unacceptable” and called for being held responsible.
Egypt said that the shots are fired at the group “violates all diplomatic standards,” while Turkey said it was “still a demonstration of Israel’s systematic contempt for international law and human rights.”
Both countries called for an immediate investigation and explanation of Israel.
