A Kenian Member of Parliament was shot in the streets of the capital Nairobi by shooters on a motorcycle in a suspected murder.
The police said that the attackers had left the vehicle of Charles ong’ondo before one of them got off the engine and shot him up close.
“The nature of this crime seems to be both targeted and in advance,” said the spokesperson for the Muchiri Nyaga police in a statement.
The opposition Member of Parliament had complained two months ago about threats for his life, the local media reported.
After the shooting on Wednesday, his driver and Bodyguard, both unharmed, knew the wounded MP to the Nairobi Hospital in Haarsten, where he was declared dead on arrival.
The attack happened along Ngong Road near a busy roundabout that was often staffed by the traffic police and well protected with cameras.
Shortly after the shooting, senior police commanders and investigators visited the scene and his investigations, the police said.
President William Ruto commissioned the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the attack, and added: “Those responsible must be called to account.”
Colleague legislators who visited the scene on Wednesday evening, expressed shock and indignation about the murder and called for rapid research and justice.
Parliament speaker Moses Wetang’ula described the MP as a “fearless and distinct” legislator and called his shooting “devastating”.
The motive for his murder is still not clear, but the softly spoken legislator had publicly claimed that some “rented goons” intended to kill him and attribute the conspiracy to local politics.
In February he expressed his concern about growing violence and unrest during public events in the Kasipul constituency in West -Kenia that he represented.
“When you hear that I have been killed, Kasipul will no longer be the same. But I know they will not kill me because I have the Bible in my phone and another under my pillow,” was said at the time.
On Thursday, murder detectives visited the scene with the Minister of the Interior Kipchumba Muromomas who say that “investigations have been improved”.
His second term in parliament served as a member of the Orange Democratic Movement, led by veteran politician Raila Odinga.
In his statement, Odinga condemned the murder and said that the legislator was “merciless and in cool blood, shot by a murderer”.
“We have lost a brave son of the ground!” Odinga added.
Odinga lost to President Ruto in the 2022 elections and rejected the results due to alleged irregularities.
The former prime minister has since concluded a political deal with Ruto, so that some opposition members join the cabinet in what is referred to as the “broad government” – who were supported.
