Spectators can fly through the Los Angeles airs and escape from the infamous traffic of the city during the 2028 Olympic Games if the organizers have their way.
LA28, the committee in charge of planning the third summer games of the city, has announced a collaboration with Archer Aviation to offer an Air Taxi service during both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games.
The company says that it is planning to use a fleet plane to sail fans to and from locations, LA28 announced on Thursday.
Flying taxis have been a long -term dream. They were planned to debut in the Paris games in 2024, but were not certified on time by Europe’s Air Safety Agency.
Similarly, Archer Aviation is not yet certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration, which means that the aircraft is not yet ready for commercial use. It is founder and CEO has said that he hoped to have that important cancellation – a type of certification that says that it meets design and safety standards – by the aviation controller this year.
If they receive certification for the 2028 competitions on time, the Air Taxis would offer flights to residents and visitors for 10-20 minutes and fly between selected destinations, including several of the largest Olympic locations in the region.
It is unclear how much each trip would cost, but the founder and CEO of Archer Aviation, Adam Goldstein, said he wants to keep prices comparable to a high -quality Uber, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Just like the popular Ride-Hailing service, customers could request an air taxi via an app. The aircraft can wear a maximum of four people and work in the same way as a helicopter in its start and landings.
The governed midnight plane is part of a family of vehicles called “Evtols” – which stands for electric vertical start and landing aircraft.
Archer, which is supported by Boeing and United Airlines, is one of the various EVTOL makers who want to change trips in busy urban cities by offering short-distance scales.
The industry has seen many obstacles, including battery density, and none of the aircraft is still approved by the FAA.
Archer’s midnight plane is built with 12 engines and propellers and produces “less noise and emissions than a traditional helicopter”, according to LA28.
Archer Aviation hopes that it will be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) “at similar levels of safety as commercial planes”.
“We want to transform the way people around Los Angeles are bypassing, and leaving an inheritance that forms the future of transport in America,” said Mr. Goldstein in a statement. “There is no better time to do that than during the LA28 competitions.”
Safety, regulations and investments have proved to be a major obstacle for companies that try to introduce flying taxis. Despite the setbacks and delays, many still believe that they can be the future of transport.
Archer Aviation remains convinced that its planes can increase recent trends and see the 2028 Olympic Games as a way to introduce them to the world.
The British government announced the future of flight action plan in 2024, and predicted that the first flying taxi could take off in the UK in 2026 and become a regular face in the air.
Los Angeles has previously organized the Olympic Games in 1984 and 1932, making it the third time that the city has organized the summer games. The city has announced that the 2028 competitions do not allow cars, quite a task after plans had been received to expand the transits system of the area.
