Mali’s Military Junta has dissolved all political parties in the country in the midst of a growing action against deviating opinions since the army seized power.
“All meetings of members of political parties and organizations of a political character are resolved on the national territory,” said a statement that was read on the state of TV on Tuesday.
The decision was validated by military leader Assimi Gota, who took power after coup in 2020 and 2021 and will remain in power for at least five years, despite promises to keep elections.
The move is expected to cause new resistance by political parties that demand the country that the country returns to democratic rule.
Since last year, the military authorities have intensified a performance against political activities.
Last week, after a rare pro-democracy protest, two opposition leaders were abducted by armed men and said they were police officers. The authorities have not commented on the reported arrests.
A national conference organized by the regime – but boycot by leading opposition parties – Last month, naming Gen GoiTa advised as president until 2030.
The movement led to conviction of opposition figures and human rights groups. The Junta originally strived to hold elections in February 2022.
The presidential decision that was read on Tuesday evening warned Malians not to ignore the dissolution of political parties, but did not outline any punishments.
It said that everyone who works in a political or administrative role “could continue their duties without a party relationship”.
The most important opposition coalition still has to comment, but one of the members, Nouhoum Togo, trivialized the move in a post on social media.
“It doesn’t matter how difficult they try to make you invisible, your value does not depend on their recognition,” Togo, President of the Union for the protection of the Republic (USR) party posted.
The last order follows the suspension of all political activities – a different recommendation from the National Conference – that resolves the opposition.
A coalition of one hundred parties had planned a protest against the transitional authorities last week, but postponed it after the suspension of political activities.
Since the power, the Junta leader has formed an alliance with couplers in neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger, so that the region is turned to Russia after drastically reduced ties with former colonial power of France.
Gen GoiTa has also withdrawn Mali from the regional grouping ECOWAs about its demands to restore democratic rule. Burkina Faso and Niger have also left the group.
