The watch officer of a huge container ship that ran to the ground and crashed against a garden in Norway, the police told that he slept at the time of the incident.

Researchers said that the man, a Ukrainian national in his thirty, admitted that he had fallen asleep while he was employed himself.

He is accused of negligent navigation and the police also investigate whether rules with regard to work and resting on board the ship were complied with.

The 135m ship (443ft) missed a house by meters when it ran near Byneset, near Trondheim, Central Norway on Thursday morning. Efforts to reflect have not been successful so far.

“The accused person was the officer at the time of the incident,” said the public prosecutor in the police of Trondelag in a press statement.

“While questioning, he stated that he fell asleep while he was alone, which led to the ship walking on the ground,” he added.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

The Cypriot flag freight ship, the NCL Salten, had 16 people on board and traveled to the southwest through the Trondheim Fjord to Orkanger when it was off course.

Johan Helberg, who owns the building, described the moment he looked out of his window and saw the ship in his front garden.

“I had to bow my neck to see the top. It was so unreal,” he said in an interview with The Guardian.

He was warned about the commotion by a panic neighbor who heard the sound of the ship and watched while the straight went to the coast.

“Five meters further south and it would have entered the bedroom,” Mr. Helberg told the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation.

According to reports, the ship had previously acted in 2023, but the crew managed to free it with the help of its own strength.
