Mexican judge arrested during 2014 disappearance of 43 students

The police in Mexico have arrested a retired judge accused of messing with evidence with regard to the disappearance of 43 students from Iguala more than ten years ago.

Lambertina Galeana Marín was the president of the Superior Tribunal of Justice in the state of Guerrero when the trainee teachers were missing in 2014.

The 79-year-old is suspected of having given an order that led to the disappearance of CCTV images that researchers said it was the key to the matter.

She was arrested in the city of Chilpancingo, three years after an order for her arrest was issued.

Mexico has long pursued the disappearance of the 43 students – who all followed the same teacher training in the city of Ayotzinapa -.

More than ten years later, and despite various studies, it is still still unknown about what happened in the night of 26 September 2014.

The remains of three of the students have been found, while the place of residence of the 40 others remains a mystery, although they are generally killed.

A report from 2022 by a truth committee By the Mexican government with an investigation into the case, it turned out that it was a crime sponsored by the State in which federal and national authorities were involved.

According to the committee’s report, the local police worked members of a criminal group to violently disappear the students.

The students had gone to Iguala to order buses to bring them to an annual protest in Mexico city.

The Mexican government said that both the police and a local criminal group known as Guerreros Unidos (United Warriors) were warned about the activities of the students.

Guerreros Unidos suspected that the students seized buses in Iguala were infiltrated by members of a rival criminal gang, Los Rojos, claimed the report.

Both the police and the members of Guerreros Unidos then assembled various roadblocks in and around the city, it added.

One of those roadblocks, staffed by local, state and federal police, was on the street outside the Palace of the Justice.

Two Palace of Justice employees told the researchers that the security cameras of the palace had recorded what had happened on the roadblock.

However, the images were never handed over to the authorities and when officials tried to pick it up almost a year later, the images were “lost”, researchers said in 2015.

The prosecutors have since claimed that the Galeana ordered the images to destroy or remove the images.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Security of Mexico said that Mrs. Galeana would be confronted with accusations of forced disappearance.
