Mexico sues Google above the name of ‘Gulf of America’

Mexico sues Google for ignoring repeated requests to not mention the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America on Google Maps for American users, says President Claudia Sheinbaum.

She did not say where the lawsuit had been tightened. Google did not respond to the BBC request for comments.

On Thursday, the House of Representatives, led by the Republicans, voted to officially rename the Golf for federal agencies.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on his first day in January.

He argued that the change was justified because the US “do most of the work there, and it’s ours”.

However, the government of Sheinbaum claims that the Order of Trump only applies to the American part of the continental board.

“The only thing we want is that the decision issued by the US government must be observed,” she said, claiming that the US is missing the authority to rename the entire wave.

In January Sheinbaum wrote a letter to Google in which the company was asked to reconsider his decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico for American users. The following month she threatened legal steps.

At the time, Google said that it made the change as part of “a long -term practice” of following name changes when updated by official government sources.

It said that the Golf – which is limited by the US, Cuba and Mexico – would not be changed for people who use the app in Mexico, and users elsewhere in the world will see the label: “Golf of Mexico (Gulf of America)”.

The refusal of the news agency of the Associated Press (AP) to refer to the Gulf of America led to a months of conflict with the White House, which limited access from AP to certain events.

A federal judge ordered the White House in April to stop or the side of the outlet.

Trump hinted on Wednesday that he recommends changing the way the US refers to another water body.

During an upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, he is planning to announce that the US will now refer the Persian Gulf like the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia, AP reported.

The Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has responded by saying that he hopes that the “absurd rumors” “” are no more than a disinformation campaign “and such a movement would” bring the wrath of all Iranians “.
