Mistrial declared in the event that officer in fatal shooting of black motorist

A judge declared a mistrial after the jury was unable to reach a verdict in the murder process of a police officer in Michigan who, during a traffic stop, kicked a black man deadly.

Christopher Schurr was accused of second-degree murder of the murder of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 4 April 2022.

The killing of Mr Lyoya, a Congolese immigrant, led to widespread protests and put the issue of racial injustice and police work in the spotlight.

“It hurts. My family, my wife, we bleed,” said Mr. Lyoya’s father after the judge declared Mistrial on Thursday. “We will continue to fight until we get true justice for Patrick.”

The Mistrial is a partial victory for Mr. Schurr, who could still get a different process.

The incident with April 4 was in graphic details and from several corners on a bodycam and dashboard camera, an eye -whiteness’ telephone and a doorbell security system from a nearby house.

The scuffle over the taser was central to the defense of Mr Schurr, who testified that he was in great fear because a taser can cause “unbearable pain” and injury.

“I believed that if I hadn’t done it at the time, I wouldn’t go home,” said Mr. Schurr of the shooting of Mr Lyoya.

Mr. Schurr, an officer of the Grand Rapids Police Department for seven years, was fired shortly after being sued in 2022.

Patrick Lyoya came to the US from the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2014 with his family. He had lived in Grand Rapids for about five years, according to the Office of Civil Rights Attorney Benjamin Crump, who represents the Lyoya family.

His murder caused protests in Grand Rapids, renewing questions about the brutality of the police and why traffic stops involving black men, so often resulting in tragedy.

The mistrial only comes one day after three former Memphis police officers were acquitted of murder in the murder of Tyre Nichols, a black man who was beaten during a traffic stop in 2023.
