‘Multiple fatalities’ after plane crash near San Diego

It is thought that several people died after a small plane crashed in a residential street in San Diego on Thursday morning.

No residents were seriously injured, but there was “more than one deadly” among the passengers on board, said assistant fire commander than Eddy.

Several houses were destroyed and cars found fire after the private plane crashed in the Murphy Canyon residential area of the city. About 100 people have been evacuated from nearby areas, the police said.

The small plane was a Cessna 550 plane, said the Federal Aviation Administration, which can transport eight to 10 people, including the pilot.

Authorities have not unveiled the identity of the passengers on board.

In a press conference, assistant fire brigade then Eddy said that there was “aircraft fuel everywhere”, and that the main goal was to search all houses and bring people to safety.

He confirmed that there was a “direct hit for several houses”. No one in those houses is supposed to be seriously injured.

The San Diego police said on social media that one person had been admitted to the hospital and two were treated and released. They added that the area was expected to be closed all day.

Images from the scene show the charred cars that are littered across the street.

Local resident Christopher Moore told The Associated Press that he and his wife were awakened by a loud bang in the early hours of the morning.

Mr. Moore said they looked out the window and saw smoke, and the couple grabbed their two young children and fled.

Once on the street they saw a car flooded in flames.

“It was certainly horrible, but sometimes you just have to drop your head and get to safety,” said Mr. Moore.

A marine who lives near the crash location told Fox News that he heard a “strange whistling squeaky sound” followed by a “tree and a shake in the house”.

The plane seemed to be on its way to Montgomery Field, an airport of 10 km north of the center of San Diego.
