Pope Leo XIV will give his first Sunday and address to a crowd at St Peter’s Square in the Vatican today.
He will recite the Regina Caeli prayer, in honor of the Virgin Mary, in his first public speech since his election on Thursday with White Smoke was announced.
After delivering Sunday mass, Pope Leo will bless those who have gathered outside on the square – and deliver his reflections.
On Saturday he visited a sanctuary outside of Rome and Bad then for the grave of his deceased predecessor Francis in the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
Pope Leo will be formally inaugurated on 18 May on a mass on St Peter’s Square next week.

He explained that he had chosen the name Leo after a 19th-century pope known for his doctrine about social justice.
The new pope also suggested that the development of artificial intelligence and other progress meant that the church was necessary today for the defense of human dignity and justice.
He is due to Hold an audience with the media on Monday Prior to his inauguration next Sunday.
As part of that mass, he will deliver a homily in the presence of countless heads of state and dignitaries.
The 69-year-old is the 267th occupant of the throne of St. Peter and the first American to become a pope. He will lead members of the global community of the Catholic Church of 1.4 billion people.
Born Robert Francis Prevost in ChicagoHe worked as a missionary in Peru for many years before he became an archbishop there. He also has Peruvian nationality.
Although Leo was born in the US, the Vatican described him as the second pope from America. Pope Francis, from Argentina, was the first.
Pope Leo is generally seen as a moderate that can offer “Continuity” and “Unity” After the death of his predecessor last month.
The new pope is supposed to have shared the views of Francis about migrants, the poor and the environment.
