The reigning just Democratic Alliance of Portugal has won Snap – parliamentary elections – the third in the same number of years – again falling short than a majority.
The leader Luís Montenegro promised supporters to “stimulate investments” and “to guarantee prosperity and social justice”.
Socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santos announced his resignation after his party was second and lost so many seats that the neck and neck ended up with the extreme right-wing Chega-a relatively newcomer.
The socialists could even slip behind Chega as the results of voters abroad, which last a few days, which are in last year’s elections, when two of the four seats went to Chega, and one for the socialists.
Chega leader André Ventura said that the “historical” result marked the end of the dominance of two parties in Portugal.
His campaign had focused on the issues of immigration and corruption, and Chega was probably helped by the fact that these elections and the two were activated by scandals in which the prime minister of the day was involved.
In his comments to supporters, Montenegro thanked both his family and the ‘political family’ who defended him against attacks on deals made by a company that he set up before he became party leader and is now owned by his sons.
This was the controversy that caused the elections after the government lost a voice of confidence.
In the meantime, Santos repeated his opinion in his own farewell commenter that Montenegro was not suitable for being prime minister, which suggests that the socialist party would not lower the case.
