Rwanda is located at the “early stage” of conversations with the Trump government to accept migrants deported by the US, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the East African Land Olivier Nduhungirehe said.
His comments come after the American State Secretary Marco Rubio said last month that Washington “actively searched” to countries that would take some of the most despicable people “.
Nduhungirehe said that the conversations were “not new to us”, because Rwanda had previously agreed to accept migrants who were deported by the UK.
However, the UK left the scheme, which had to do with numerous legal challenges, after the Labor Government of Sir Keir Starmer took office last July.
Nduhungirehe said to Rwandan TV on Sunday, said that the government was in the “spirit” to “give another chance to migrants who have problems all over the world.”
Nduhungirehe added that the conversations with the US continued, and it was too early to predict their outcome.
Since he came to position in January, US President Donald Trump has focused on accelerating the removal of migrants without papers, with the promise of “mass deportations”.
In February, El Salvador offered to record criminals who were deported from the US, including those with American citizenship, and to house them in his mega-jail.
Salvadorean President Nayib Bukele said his government would do this “in exchange for compensation”.
Panama And Costa Rica has also taken in migrants who have been deported from the US.
Last week an unnamed Rwandan officer told the Washington Post That the country was “open” for recording more migrants who were driven out of the US after he had accepted an Iraqi in March.
The official added that conversations with the US started shortly after Trump’s inauguration in January.
Rwanda was previously criticized because of his human rights record, including the risk that those who are sent to the East African nation can be re -deported to countries where they can endanger.
However, Rwanda says it is a safe place for refugees.
