Search continues in Praia Luz of Portugal

Searching for Madeleine McCann must be resumed in Portugal, 18 years after she disappeared from an apartment complex in Praia da Luz in the Algarve.

Portuguese and German authorities are expected to continue to focus the search on non -used buildings and wells.

Madeleine was three when she disappeared during a vacation with her parents on 3 May 2007, which led to a Europe-wide police investigation that has become one of the best-profile cases of missing people.

This search – which covers the municipality of Lagos, near Praia da Luz – will continue until Friday in a 21 km square place between where Madeleine was missing and where the main suspect of the German researchers had stayed at that time.

Madeleine’s case was initially dealt with by the Portuguese authorities with the help of the metropolitan police, but German researchers took the lead in 2020, when they identified the German national Christian Brückner as their main suspect.

The 48-year-old is currently a sentence in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old American tourist in Portugal in 2005. He will be released in September, but that can be pushed back to the beginning of 2026 if he does not pay a fine that he owes.

The search location is approximately 3.5 miles from the Ocean Club Resort, where Madeleine and her family had stayed.

Roads in the run -up to the area – which is large and usually Scrblland – have been closed since Monday, where the Grass and Vegetation team had cleared.

On Tuesday morning a Portuguese fire truck and four vehicles that the German police wear. Firefighters also played a piece of the search.

The last search took place two years ago and was aimed at a reservoir northeast of where the British toddler stayed. Brückner, who spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017, turned out to have photos and videos of themselves near the reservoir.

German authorities suspect Brückner of murder and fear that if he is not accused of something new, he will disappear after his release. The British police continue to deal with the case as an investigation into missing persons.

Brückner has repeatedly denied any involvement.

The German police have a European order approved by Portuguese Justice Officers, will enable them to perform searches on private land. This week’s search, it is expected that 21 different plots of land will include.

Officials have not announced whether they are performing this latest search in Portugal based on new information, making it look like they still look at places where proof or a body could have been hidden

Portuguese authorities have also mentioned Brückner as a formal suspect, or “Arguido”. They said they would seize any evidence in the last search for the German authorities.

The with Police, who said this week it was aware of the searches carried out by the German police in Portugal, continues his investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine.

The case, known as Operation Grange, has been going on since 2011 and has cost around £ 13.3 million so far.

In the night, Madeleine, her parents had been with friends in a restaurant a short distance from the apartment on the ground floor during dinner in which they and her younger twin brothers and sisters were asleep.

Her mother, Kate, discovered that she was missing around 10 p.m.

A German documentary in 2022 found evidence that Brückner occasionally worked at the Ocean Club as a handyman, while German public prosecutors also linked his mobile phone information and a car sales to their business against him.

Madeleine’s parents marked the 18th anniversary of her disappearance last month and said that their “determination not to leave stones, is not repellent”.
