South Africans pay tribute to actor Presley Chweneyagae, who died at the age of 40.
In a statement that announced his death, his desk described him as a “South African icon” and one of the “most gifted and beloved actors” of the country.
The South African government published a message about X that described him as “a gifted narrator whose talent enlightened our screens and hearts”.
Chweneyagae, who was born in 1984 in the north-western province in South Africa, was given his major international break after the leading role in the 2005 film, who yielded the country for the best foreign language film.
Tsotsi, a powerful crime film in which Chweneyagae plays the leading role, investigates gang life in a South African municipality.
Chweneyagae also played in the Nelson Mandela Biopic Long Walk to Freedom in 2013, and traded in various theater productions.
The South African film and television prizes described him as a “real legend of the South African cinema” and a “powerhouse artist”.
The Ministry of Sport, Art and Culture issued a statement with its role in the popular South African series River and Cobizzi.
“The Ministry of Sport, Art and Culture is mourning the loss of a real pioneer – a storyteller who loved the soul of a nation in his profession,” said culture minister Gayton McKenzie in the statement.
