The Swiss village of Blatten was partially destroyed after a huge piece of glacier crashed into the valley.
Although the village had been evacuated a few days ago because of the fears that the birch glacier falls apart, one person was reported missing and many houses have been completely flattened.
Local authorities describe the situation as “very bad” and have asked for support from the disaster relief unit of the Swiss army. Members of the Swiss government are on their way to the stage.
The 300 inhabitants of the village had to leave their houses on 19 May after geologists had guarded the area that the glacier seemed unstable. Now many of them may never be able to return.
The disaster that has happened to blats is the worst nightmare for communities in the Alps.
Climate change ensures that the glaciers – frozen rivers of ice melt – faster and faster, and the permafrost, often described as the glue that holds the high mountains together, is also stripped.
On Wednesday, drone images showed a large part of the birch glacier that collapsed at around 15:30 (14:30 BST). The avalanche of mud that was wiped over blades sounded like a deafening roar, while it hit the valley down and left a huge cloud of dust.
Glaciologists who follow the thaw have warned for years that some alpine cities and villages can be endangered, and blats is not even the first to be evacuated.
In Oost -Switzerland, residents of the village of Brienz were evacuated two years ago because the mountain slope was crumbling above them.
Since then they are only allowed to return for short periods.
Eight hikers were killed in 2017 and many houses were destroyed when the greatest landslide came close to the village of Bondo in more than a century.
The most recent report in the condition of the glaciers of Switzerland suggested that they could all be within a century, if the global temperatures could not be held above pre-industrial levels within a rise of 1.5 ° C, ten years ago by nearly 200 countries under the Paris climate agreement.
Many climate scientists suggest that Target has already been missed, which means that the glacier will continue to accelerate, which increases the risk of floods and landslides and threatens more communities such as blats.
