Some families of those who were killed in one Jeju air aircraft crash last December have filed a criminal complaint against 15 people, including the Minister of Transport of South Korea and the CEO of the airline, for professional negligence.
The 72 surviving relatives call for a more thorough investigation into the crash, killing 179 of the 181 people on board – making it the deadliest plane crash in South Korean soil.
The crash was “not a simple accident,” they claim, but a “large social disaster caused by negligent management of risks”.
Almost five months later, the authorities still study what the plane crashes at Muan International Airport and then fell apart into flames.
The police had already opened a criminal investigation before this last complaint and Jeju Air CEO Kim E-Bae forbade to leave the country, but no one has been charged with the incident.
One of the family members, Kim Da-Hye, denounced the “lack of progress” in investigations.
“We are filled with deep anger and despair. After taking this extraordinary measure to submit a criminal complaint, we will not give up and we will continue to pursue the truth,” Mr. Kim said in a statement to the media.
Among the 15 people mentioned in the complaint, government officials, aircraft officials and airport staff were responsible for construction, supervision, facility management and bird control.
The complaint that was submitted on Tuesday raises questions about the circumstances of the crash, or air traffic control responded correctly and whether the strengthening of a hill at the end of the runway has violated the regulations.
The plane, a Boeing 737-800, left on the morning of December 29 from the Thai capital of Bangkok and flew to Muan in South Korea.
Five minutes after the pilots had made contact with Muan International Airport, they reported to hit a bird and explained a Mayday signal.
The pilots then tried to land from the opposite direction, in which the aircraft belly landed without its landing gear. It crossed the runway later, hit a concrete structure and exploded.
Earlier this year, researchers said They found bird springs in both engines Van de Jet, but did not conclude the extent to which the bird strike was a contributing factor.
Since the incident, some relatives are also the target of one Torrent of conspiracies and malignant jokes online.
These include suggestions that families were “excited” to receive compensation from the authorities, or that they were “fake victims”. From March of this year, eight people were arrested to make such different and defamatory online messages.
