The first day of the conclave in a minute

The first vote of the conclave – the secret process to choose a new pope – has not made a decision.

After a long wait, black smoke came out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel around 9 p.m. local time – which means that the 133 cardinals have not been able to choose a new Pontiff inside.

Threads were gathered in their tens of thousands on St Peter’s Square for the first vote of the conclave – the results of which took more than two hours to announce.

Cardinals return tomorrow to a Sistine Chapel with a door closed for more voting rounds.

Laura Gozzi of the BBC was in Vatican City all day next to the waiting crowd.
