Trial of medical staff collapses after the documentary scandal

The process of the medical staff of Diego Maradona collapsed in Argentina after it has been established that a judge involved in the case had participated in a documentary about this.

The judge responsible for the proceedings said that the process, which started on 11 March and is expected to last until July, would have to start again.

Seven members of the Maradona medical team were accused of negligent murder with regard to the death of the former football player in 2020. They deny the allegations.

One of the three presiding judges, Julieta Makintach, resigned this week.

Maradona, a former midfielder of Napoli and Argentina, recovered in his house in Buenos Aires of brain surgery for a blood clot in November 2020 when he died of a heart attack, 60 years old.

Under the medical team are a neurosurgeon, a doctor and a night nurse. They claim that the retired football player refused further treatment and should have stayed at home for longer after his operation.

If convicted, they are confronted in prison between eight and 25 years.

Earlier this week, public prosecutor accused Patricio Ferrari Makintach van worn “like an actress and not a judge” After she participated in a documentary about the case.

Like a trailer for the documentary series, called Divine Justice, was played before the court, defense lawyer Rodolfo Baque called “Trash!” At Makintach.

Maradona’s daughter Gianinna and his former partner Veronica Ojeda both cried after seeing the images.

It is a violation of the court rules for unauthorized filming to take place and the documentary was filmed without the permission of the court.

Following criticism because he participated in the show, Makintach said she had “no choice”, but to apologize from the case.

The process was then postponed pending the decision on Thursday, which would eventually explain a mistrial.

Since the beginning, the trial had heard the testimony of nearly 50 witnesses, including the daughters of Maradona.

The date for the new test was initially not determined and new judges were not nominated.
