The Trump government has moved to escalate a row of Harvard’s ability to register international students with the oldest university in America.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Name on X that the administration has withdrawn the “Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification from Harvard as a result of their absenteeism to comply with the law”.

“Let this serve as a warning for all universities and academic institutions throughout the country,” she wrote.

Harvard called the move “illegal” in a statement.

“We are fully committed to maintaining Harvard’s ability to organize our international students and scientists, who come from more than 140 countries and the university – and enrich this nation – immeasurably,” said the university.

“We work quickly to offer guidance and support to members of our community. This retaliation campaign threatens to cause serious damage to the Harvard community and our country and undermines Harvard’s academic and research mission.”

The decisions of the Trump administration can make thousands of international students study at the university.

Almost 7,000 international students were registered with the institution last academic year, according to university data, which make up 27.2% of the student organ.
