Donald Trump says that he instructs his government to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the former prison on an island off the coast of California.
In a message on his social social site on Sunday, President Trump said that “too long America is plagued by cruel, violent and repeated criminal perpetrators”.
The reopening of Alcatraz would serve as a “symbol of law, order and justice,” he said.
The prison was closed in 1963 and Alcatraz Island is currently active as a tourist location. It is close to the Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco.
“Today I direct the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Ministry of Justice, FBI and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially extensive and rebuilt Alcatraz,” Trump wrote.
The prison would “house the most ruthless and violent perpetrators of America”.
President Trump crashes with the courts about his policy to send alleged gang members to a prison in El Salvador. In March he sent a group of more than 200 alleged Venezuelan gang members. He also spoke about sending “own criminals” to foreign prisons.
Alcatraz was originally a fort of the Navy defense, and that was it rebuilt in the beginning of the 20th century as a military prison. The Ministry of Justice took over in the 1930s and it began to take convicts of the federal prison system. Among the more famous prisoners were the infamous gangsters Al Capone, Mickey Cohen and George “Machinegeweer” Kelly.
The prison was also made famous by the 1962 film, Birdman of Alcatraz, starring Burt Lancaster, about the convicted murderer Robert Stroud, who, while fanciering a life imprisonment on the prison island, developed an interest in birds and became an expert ornithologist.
It was also the site of the film The Rock, in the lead role Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage, about a former SAS captain and FBI -Chemicus who saves hostages from Alcatraz Island.
The prison was closed because it was too expensive to keep operating, according to the Federal Bureau of Prison website. It was almost three times more expensive to operate than any other federal prison, largely because of the island location.
