Ukraine says it has discovered a spy network of Hungarian that is trying to obtain intelligence about its defense.
The country’s security service said that the two alleged Hungarian spies had held that to collect the intelligence accused of his air defense systems.
“For the first time in the history of Ukraine, the security service has exposed a Hungarian military intelligence network that carried out spy activities to the detriment of our state,” said the SBU.
Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO – both strong allies of Ukraine – but President Viktor Orban has repeatedly chosen Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. The Hungarian government did not respond to the claims.
The alleged spy network was founded by the military intelligence of Hungary with the aim of collecting data about the location of air defense systems in the West -Zakarpattia region, which lies near the border of Ukraine at Hungary, the SBU said.
The spies had also investigated the public sentiment among the locals to predict their reaction in the case of a Hungarian raid, according to the SBU.
The SBU gave no indications that the alleged conspiracy was Russia.
The two detained people were a woman and a man who were former members of the Ukrainian army, said the security service.
The alleged spies were taken into custody in their homes, reported the Ukrainian news agency Interfax, and telephones and other evidence that indicated that they were spies during a search.
The prisoners are suspected of betrayal and are confronted with life imprisonment.
