Ukraine claims that strike in the Russian Kursk in the midst of reports of new invasion

Ukraine said it was a drone command unit in the Kursk region, in the midst of reports of new attempts to cross Russia.

Sunday’s attack on the unit was in the vicinity of the Russian village of Tyotkin, according to the Ukrainian general staff.

Several Russian military bloggers also reported that Ukrainian troops had tried to cross the village, to place images – not yet verified by the BBC – from vehicles that break through tankfalls on the border.

The reports came after Moscow claimed to have regained control of the entire region in April, nine months after a Ukrainian troops launched a surprise invasion. KYIV insists that soldiers are still active across the border.

On Monday, Ukrainian troops shot rockets across the border and, according to the bloggers, crossed minefields in special vehicles.

“The enemy blew up bridges with rockets at night and launched an attack with armored groups in the morning,” said blogger Rvvoenkor according to Reuters news agency.

“The vehicles of the mining doors started to make passages in the minefields, followed by armored vehicles with troops. There is a tough battle on the border.”

In a statement on Monday, Ukraine said: “Nine months after the start of the Kursk operation, the defense forces of Ukraine retain a military presence on the territory of the Russian region of Kursk.”

Although there has been no official response from Moscow, some military bloggers have also published maps with opposing forces trying to cross the border in two places to Tyotkin -near the drone command unit that was affected.

Meanwhile, in Sumy – about 12 km across the border of Tyotkin in the northeast of Ukraine – the local authorities insisted on people to evacuate from two settlements, Reuters reported.

Ukraine originally made his surprise in August 2024 in Kursk to create a buffer zone and to protect Sumy and surrounding areas, while also hoping to use it in future negotiations.
