West Nile virus detected for the first time in British mosquitoes

Fragments of the West -Nijl virus were detected in British mosquitoes for the first time, said the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

A research program of the UKHSA and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) found the genetic material in mosquitoes collected in Great Britain in 2023.

Western Nile virus is a disease worn by vector that is usually found in birds that usually circulates through bird biting mosquitoes. In rare cases, mosquitoes can transfer the virus to people.

A Ukhsa spokesperson said that the risk to the general public is “very low”, but that advice to healthcare professionals will be issued.
