An assessment supported by the UN has said that the population of Gaza of approximately 2.1 million Palestinians exists a “critical risk” of famine and is confronted with “extreme levels of food insecurity” as an Israeli blockage about humanitarian aid continues.
The latest report of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) said that since October 2024 there had been a “large deterioration”, but concluded that famine was not currently taking place.
It – two -month -fires between Israel and Hamas “led to a temporary postponement” in Gaza, said the report, but renewed hostilities and an Israeli blockade on help – since the beginning of March – had “reversed” improvements.
About 244,000 people currently experienced the most serious or “catastrophic” levels of food insecurity, said it, and called for urgent action to prevent the “increasingly likely” risk of famine.
Israel renewed its military operations in Gaza in mid -March and has prevented food, medication and other help from entering 70 days and said that Hamas is busy exerting its remaining hostages.
There has been international conviction of the blockade, including the UN who said it has supplies at Gaza’s border crossings, ready to come in if Israel allows it. Aid organizations have said that the blockade can be a war crime and amounts to a policy of hunger.
The IPC assessment, released on Monday, showed that half a million people – or one in five – were starving in Gaza. It said that nearly 71,000 children under the age of five are expected to be acute malnourished in the next 11 months to April 2026.
It added: “Many households resort to extreme measures to find food, including begging, and collecting waste to sell to buy something food.”
The report said that the current situation, compared to the Analysis of October 2024, “a major deterioration was driven in one of the world’s most serious food and food crises by conflicts and characterized by unprecedented human suffering”.
The analysis showed that 1.95 million people, or 93% of the Gaza population, lived due to high levels of acute food insecurity, including 244,000 with “catastrophic” levels.
The IPC – a worldwide initiative of UN agencies, auxiliary groups and governments – is the primary mechanism that the international community uses to conclude whether there is a famine.
Israeli officials have denied that there is a hunger crisis in Gaza because of the amount of help that has arrived during the ceasefire.
It comes as Hamas said it would release the Israeli American hostage player Edan Alexander as part of the efforts to reach a cease-fire agreement. The group said it was also meant to facilitate a deal for the accession of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The office of the Israeli Prime Minister said it had not committed to a cease -the fire, but only for a “safe corridor” for the release of Mr. Alexander.
US President Donald Trump arrives in the middle on Tuesday and Israel has sworn to expand his military offensive against Hamas if no deal is reached towards the end of his visit.

In his report, the IPC said that the auxiliary distribution plans were estimated as “very insufficient” and it was expected that large parts of the population would “have important problems with access to the proposed distribution sites”.
The war was activated by the attacks led by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and hostage more than 250. About 59 hostages remain in Gaza, of whom a maximum of 24 is supposed to live.
According to the Hamas-Runned Health Minister, the Israel’s military campaign killed 52,862 people in Gaza.
