Lando Norris completed the first training for McLaren on the Japanese Grand Prix when Yuki Tsunoda made a solid start to Red Bull’s debut.
Only moments after he left the track when he fought with his MCL39, Norris released time 1: 28,549s to defeat Mercedes’s George Russell by 0.163.
Despite the fastest time, the leader of the championship driver sounded upset about the team radio when he complained about the reducing tires during a longer run later at the meeting, while his teammate Oscar Piasti was only 15.
The duo Ferrari Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were third and fourth before Max Verstappen in fifth place, which was in sixth place in a tenth of a second before his new teammate Tsunoda.
Tsunoda was remarkably promoted to Red Bull from the junior teams of Racing Bulls just two races into the season, with Liam Lawson degraded a little more than three months after Milton Keynes chose New Zealand to be Verstappen for the 2025 season.
Being just a tenth of the ruling world champion was an encouraging beginning for Tsunod at his home race, although during their longer runs later in the meeting seemed to be a more significant gulf.
Tsunoda spoke about Team Radio at the end of the session and said, “I found an interesting car on the track. But it’s okay. Good above (session).”
Lawson was 13th place when returning to Racing Bulls, where he made the previous performance 11 Grands Prix before he was quickly watched on the Red Bull’s seat.
