Aston Villa recorded the seventh direct victory when they survived the fear of the other half to defeat the opponents to chase the Champions Nottingham Forest 2-1 and move to the sixth in the Premier League.
Unai Emery made eight changes after Wednesday’s victory 3-0 in Brighton, with Villa just days from the huge quarterfinals of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain, but you would not know it as Morgan Rogers and Donyell Malen in 15 minutes.
Rogers and Youi Tiemans, the only outfield players who keep their place in the team, joined for the first goal, followed by the second only two minutes later. Forest, without defenders Ola Aina and Alex Moreno, all at sea played five in the back.
The replacement of Jota Silva withdrew the goal for the forest for an hour, but could not earn a shift in momentum because the absence of injured attackers Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi.
Only one of their 12 second half -life hit the target, although Murillo defender almost scored a stunning equalizer of stops and hit a bar with strong efforts out of 25 yards out.
Villa adheres to the seventh consecutive victory in all competitions a month ago defining the season, with games against PSG, Newcastle, Man City, and then Crystal Palace in the FA Cup semifinals in Wembley.
Emery’s side, now sixth and only for Manchester City on the difference in the goals, hit her step at the right time.
Forest eventually paid the price for defensive errors in the first half, while Morato gripped with his shinpads for the opener and something Williams unable to watch Malen before joining the back column.
The Nuno Espirito Santo party remains third, with the fifth expected for the Champions League, but Chelsea can follow them two points with victory over Brentford, while Villa is six.
Emery satisfied with ‘Big Win’ before PSG
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery Talking with Sky Sports: “Yes, it’s a big victory.
“We started to dominate (in the first half). They played with a medium -low block and we started domination because they didn’t push high, they didn’t get out. We created chances and scored goals.
“The second half, I’m not happy. They changed their tactics, aggressively took more duels, pushed higher, and we dominated how we needed.
“But we had three more or four chances of score, but we admit more (chances) than usual. We have always been (at) the risk of drawing the match.
“But this victory is very important. I am very satisfied with the victory and very demanding to improve things.”
Nuno: We had a chance but not a score
Nottingham forest boss Nuno espirito santo Talking with Sky Sports:
“We didn’t start well in the first half. The second half was different. We had control, chances, goals. In the second half it was different, we had control, we had chances, but we didn’t get a score.
“We were not organized in the first half, we did not block lines, we allowed Villa to play, break us. It happened much harder.
“Probably it was one of the matches we created the most. We didn’t take any of the game. Now it’s about recovery, because if you lose, you won’t get so good. All miles come to you.
“But we have a good week to regroup and play against Everton.”
Asked about Awoniy’s injury, he added, “He felt something in his hamstring in the previous game against (Manchester) United.”
Rogers: Villa faith is massive
Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers Do Sky Sports:
“It’s a nice moment. We knew the big game was going. They were doing really well in the league, we knew we had to start fast. We knew this game was a necessity. The first half we were excellent we had energy.
“Getting three points is huge for us. Faith is massive right now.
“That’s our team game! That’s what football is about. We made some signatures in January, they were huge for us to compete in three competitions. We made changes, but we know all our work and roles.”
Redknapp: Rogers has the entire package
Sky Sports Punit Jamie Redknapp:
“There’s a lot that I like (about Morgan Rogers). He has strength, fineness, can score goals.
“He’s different. Not many players have a skill and physical presence.
“When he runs with the ball, it’s almost impossible to stop. He has so great legs and sees the passage. He has a whole package.”
Analysis: PSG beware, the villa is pudding
Sky Sports’ Sam Blitz:
Paris Saint-Germain is again the champions of France. Right now, they have one of the most players in Europe in Ousma Dembele. But are they clear against Aston Villa? Absolutely not.
Villa is on fire right now and it was not better to summarize how they flew out of the blocks, even though they made eight changes in the team against Nottingham Forest. Each player is ready to bring energy to this run.
Against Forest, Morgan Rogers and Youi Tiemans, they ran the show early, but Marcus Rashford and Jacob Ramsey kept this energy by leaving the bench.
Matty Cash, Lucas Digne and Pau Torres were not used on Saturday evening – they will have big roles to play with fresh legs.
And it is not as if Villa was in this tie complete intestinal. They have in their corner Emery, a serial winner, with such an excellent European knockout record.
The only team that did not show that PSG was in his career, which makes this quarterfinals even more tantalizing.
Analysis: Forest Feeling The Burn
Sky Sports’ Zinny Boswell:
Wear and tear of a successful season for Nottingham Forest in Aston Villa.
Nuno had to mix his defense in Aston Villa with injuries to Aina and Moreno unavailable against his parent club. Forest went with five backs and didn’t look comfortable.
Defensive errors from Morato and Williams were expensive for the targets, but the entire rear line was drafted in the first half. It was atypical for the forest side we got used to below Nuno.
It also seemed that the tired legs tired legs were played last weekend after 120 minutes in the FA Cup and then in the middle of the week another taxation against Manchester United. This time a positive result will not help recovery.
The goal of Jota Silva from the bench in the second half gave the team an elevator, but they lacked the firepower to cover their advantage when the momentum moved.
Top Scorer Wood and Awoniya injured that Nuno was unable to name the attacker in his match group in Villa. Perhaps less surprising that only one of their 12 second half -life hit the target.
Although their list of injuries may not be as deep as some, Forest has never expected that it will be in this position and does not have the same depth as the other clubs at the top of the table.
The third in the Premier League with seven matches and one game from the FA Cup final, there is so much in the last few months of the season. To do something special, the forest must keep up with a pace.
