Butch Harmon believes that Rory McILroy has an advantage over the defense of Scottie Scheffler’s champion as popular to claim the main glory of Masters this week, this week, Live on Sky Sports.
Scheffler comes to become the first Back-to-Back in Augusta National, because Tiger Woods and secure the green jacket for the third time in four years, with success last season is part of the remarkable 2024 that saw him claiming nine worldwide victories.
World No. 1 has to win this campaign on the PGA Tour, while McIlroy is a double champion after watching his two-ranked victory at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with the success of the playoffs over JJ Spaun last month.
Scheffler is a popular bookies over the northern Irish to win the opening major of the season, although harmony believes that McIlroy has a better chance of finding an elusive victory needed to complete his career slash.
“I think they are all excited about the way Scheffler and McILroy play,” said Harmon. “That would be two favorite.
“If I had to give you a favorite, I’d say I think it’s Rory. That doesn’t mean he’ll win, but I think – on paper – she has a favorite to win.
“He played so well in Houston. He said he had a few things he had to tighten – some of his iron game, and so, but I think he’s going to be ok. He seems to have a putter.
“Everything is sorted. The stars are sorted. The moon and everything people in space are talking about is sorted for Rory to win the masters. Now it has to go.”
After his success with the players – his sixth global victory in 14 months – that he was a “more complete player” than ever, with harmony, he hoped to see him a more relaxed access to his offer for the first major success since 2014.
“His game is completely ready for the game,” Harmon added. “I think if he can relax and just play golf and let it stand, I think it could be the one that could get him through the hump.
“It takes so bad and last year you saw that he would not be played.
“He won so much personal pressure on himself because he wants it so bad because he won three more. Scheffler is number one in the world ranking, but McILroy is playing better at the moment than anyone else.
“Great, who won a lot, Tiger and Jack Nicklaus, were able to relax and enjoy a moment because they knew it would happen.
Mcilroy historically performed slow starts at the Masters and in his previous 16 visits he published the score of the first round at the age of 60, and last year’s One-UNEM 71 first started under par since 2018.
World No. 2 has been in Augusta National Seven Career 10 years, including Scheffler finalists in 2022, although he missed a reduction in the last four years.
“I think we’ll look at Rory well on Thursday to see how his behavior is, and we’ll see how he plays,” said Harmon. “Everyone is all reinforced for the first major – it’s like a horse in the starting gate.
“You have to believe 100 % in yourself and your abilities. You’ve trained well, you’re ready for it, you know a golf course, you can overwhelm the golf course as driven by the ball – like Tiger Woods in the old days.
“It’s all right in front of him, you just have to go and just do it. You can’t push. You can’t win the tournament on Thursday or Friday, but you can stand up to position.
“Last year he always looked as if he was in a hurry and seemed to calm down. I think we’ll see another Rory this year – at least I hope it will be exciting.”
