If Rory Mcilroy is supposed to ensure a Grand Slam career in Masters on Sunday, he is likely to have to postpone a man he couldn’t be at last year’s US Open.
Northern Irishman led last June in Pinehurst with the remaining four holes, but continued in Bogey three of them, missing extremely short putts at 16 and 18.
This allowed Bryson’s breathmbeau to throw himself and take the trophy, and after 2020 the US Open earned the second major and ensured that McIlroy’s long waiting for the fifth would extend.
Now it has been almost 11 years since McILroy last recorded victory at one of the four biggest events of the game, but the barren running can end with one title that really desires.
World No. 2 will take the two -stroke lead to the final round of the Masters in Augusta National, with Brazambeau his clothes challenge after the American at the age of 18 captivated the excellent long birdie to close the absorbent Saturday.
“It’s time Rory win Masters’
Readers on the spot and those watching TV are ready for an intense battle but Sky Sports’ Dame Laura Davies and Rich Beem support McILroy to win and become a sixth player in history to win at least one four men.
Davies said, “I will stick to Rory, but it will be a titanic battle. You have to think that he has served his time and that could be Grand Slam.”
Beem added: “It’s time Rory. He learned so much about himself and it will be his stage. He is ready to win far than 10 previous attempts (on the Grand Slam) and I think he will do it.
Despite the Beem Tripping McILroy, he thinks what happened at the US Open last summer could have a bearing in Augusta National.
“I think it’s a big plus for Bryson. Certainly it will know and Rory will know it in the back of your mind. I think Rory will have a healthy conversation with his psychologist.
“Hopefully we will see the struggle for the bitter end and the hardest wins the gladiator, but I know the Bryson will have the advantage of the first tee with small games of mind.”
Pinehurst of surrender was not McIlroy’s first taste of the Grand Slam Heartache.
In 2011 he led the Masters after three rounds of three rounds to shoot 80 a day later and end up in the 15th place. What was supposed to be his first main title remains the only one who still has to win, Millstone hangs around his neck.
This pressure will be there again on Sunday, but it seems that now he has the mental power to deal with it, supported by sports psychologist Bob Rotell, the fact that he has already won the PGA Tour, players and pebble beaches and wealth of experience, good and bad.
“A situation like this reason I get up”
Playing with someone so talented and turbulent on the pitch, because Brazambeau is something McIlroy says he inspires him.
“I won’t avoid it. The situation of such a reason I get up, working hard and trying to do the right things.
“If I didn’t want this moment, I wouldn’t do those things. These are pairing I want to be in and I’m excited about it.”
Davies added: “The fact that Rory has not won it yet will hurt and receive it. You have to learn from these mistakes.
“You’ll learn more than victory. He has introduced himself to a perfect position – but it’s not over yet. And that’s not just the best two.”
Davies is right that it’s not just the best two – 2018 Masters Patrick Reed is six shots back and still in hunting, while the defending scottie Scheffler champion is still at a significant distance of seven strokes – but it’s just the best two.
McIlroy vs. Brazambeau. One man trying to secure Grand Slam, the other tries to overcome this plan. Will it be Open Open Open Open About again, or is it finally, Rory’s crowning glory?
