Chief coach Newcastle Eddie Howe will miss two more games against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa when he recovers from pneumonia.

Howe remains in a hospital that was received late on Friday after she felt “for a few days”, Newcastle said in a statement.

47-year-old missed the Premier League game against Manchester United with assistants Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones, who led the team to win 4-1. The couple will remain in charge.

“A huge thank you to all who are associated with the Newcastle United and the wider football community for your news and warm wishes. They meant a lot to me and my family,” Howe said on the club’s website.

“I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and hospital staff who treated me. I am extremely grateful for the specialized care I receive, and after a period of recovery I look forward to as soon as possible.”

Tindall said, “I just saw the message from him before I came to the press, and more congratulated by everyone in the team. He was able to watch it and I’m sure she left him in a good spirit.

“He trusted the decisions we made. We have worked for a long time and we were able to communicate early in the week and I think gave their confidence to everyone to go to a show they would be proud of – and the boys certainly did it.

“As we work, we know expectations. We have a fantastic group of players, know the expectations and requirements that the manager and everyone else insert on them.”
