Rome – An entertainment from clashes between violent fans and the police at a weekend Roman derby includes 24 injured police officers, seven arrests and at least 40,000 euros ($ 45,000) in damaged waste landfills.
Officials in the capital were still trying to summarize damages after the fans attacked the police in the riots in a strongly populated area where people gathered before Series and game between Lazio and Roma.
“I’m disgusted,” said Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri. “It is unacceptable that hooligans transform the day of sport into the scene of the City War.”
About 2,000 police officers were placed at different points of the flash around Stadio Olimpico and swept into action when Lazio’s hard “ultra” fans tried to push through a concealed area.
The fans responded to the intervention by starting fireworks and other objects with police officers. The police then responded with tear gas and water.
Judge League Serie and Gerardo Mastrandre announced on Tuesday that he would wait for a more comprehensive report on clashes than he decides on any punishment for clubs. But for Lazio, he ordered fines of EUR 6,000 ($ 600) for Roma and 4,000 euros ($ 4,500), because club supporters threw the field during the game. Seven flares were reported from the Roma end and four from Lazio End.
This season, Derby was restored to the excavation at 20:45 after six years of previous start times to avoid violence. Now the next year the game is likely to start earlier.
Lazio and Roma expressed solidarity with injured police and condemned violence.
The game ended 1-1.
The Roman derby has been troubled by violence for years.
In 2004, the derby was suspended because of a false rumor that the police had killed a boy outside the stadium.
In January, the car was released outside the stadium before the first derby of this season.
