Justin Rose admits that he feels “troubled” by the feeling of what might be after he suffered the second defeat of the apartment playoffs.
Eight years after Sergio Garcia lost in Augusta National, Rose was defeated at the first hole Rory Mcilroy, who after Rose’s attempt missed a short reach for birdies.
Rose launched the last round of seven shots behind McIlroy, but his 10. Birdie on 18th place in 66 to set the clubhouse, and with McIlroy he disappeared from five feet for the title in regulation.
“Certainly mixed emotions,” said Rose, who also finished second behind Jordan Spieth in Masters in 2015 and last year he was at Open Championship on Royal Troon.
“A lot of domes from people who come to me a lot of positive comments, so they try to absorb and absorb a week, but at the same time look at my phone and wishes to be different news.
“After I was in this situation before and this time even more, I really felt what it would be like to win. I was there on the edge of the fact that I apparently won it.
“I definitely do not feel in any way, in shape or form because of the performance I was able to put, and how I could feel in this show, but just … I don’t know what the right word is, probably tortured by the idea of what could be.”
Rose, the winner of the US Open 2013, ended last year at the Xander Schauffele runner at the Open and remains determined to compete at the highest level at the age of 44.
Talk to the press before the RBC inheritance – live on Sky Sports From Thursday – he added: “I take the loss quite badly. But listen, I was a stone that won from the open and winning the Masters.
“I would go to the PGA on the Grand Slam (Championship in May). It’s like it can be so close. I have to believe it.
“The last two majors I was there and were beaten by the best players on the top of their game.
“But on both occasions I felt like I was performing, I came across shots, played well, I felt great and do the right things to win. So I have to keep high enough to constantly create these opportunities.”
